Lucky Casino Show
On Dec. 6, 2014, the slots-playing regulars at the Northern Lights Casino in Walker were treated to a special broadcast of the Great Northern Radio Show starring Northern Minnesota writer Aaron Brown and his cast of characters.
This show celebrated the music and winter storytelling tradition of our hosts from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa, featuring the stories of Ojibwa elder Larry Aitken and the dancing and drumming of the Northbird Singers. Minnesota artists Steve Kaul and the Brass Kings brought their high energy act to the program. Bemidji-based singer/songwriter Shannon Murray brought her powerful protest-tinged tunes to our most-unusual Christmas special.
We literally interrupted an annual family reunion in the ballroom next door, so a pair of emissaries from the neighbor’s shindig joined us on the radio.
Our Great Northern Radio Players explored the Minnesota phenomenon of the Snow Day, along with a series of snow-related escapades.
The Great Northern Radio Players for this show featured Sara Breeze, Britt Aamodt, Jason and Louisa Scorich, and C.J. Anderson, with Nickolai Koivunen on house piano.
Guests for this program included Larry Aitken, artist Sage Davis, Joe & Bev Jorland, Darryl Northbird and the Northbird Singers/Dancers.
All that and new audio essays about Modern Life in Northern Minnesota by producer, writer and host Aaron Brown.
The Dec. 6, 2014 program aired live on 91.7 FM KAXE Grand Rapids, Aitkin and the Iron Range, 90.5 KBXE Bagley and Bemidji, 89.9 Brainerd and 103.9 in Ely. The show was also rebroadcast on independent public radio stations throughout Minnesota and distributed as a live stream and podcast.
